Cultural Hub Durham is an exciting initiative which aims to ensure that young people have access to a full and active cultural life. The Forge was chosen to facilitate the County Durham Cultural Hub because of our existing strong links with schools and cultural providers, and our exemplary track record in delivering cultural projects.
At the heart of the scheme is a belief that young people have the right to be both consumers and creators of culture. Teachers and people working within the cultural sector hold the key to this - by working closely together, schools, museums, galleries, theatres and other heritage and arts organisations can open up a wealth of new opportunities for young people to experience and create a new and rich diversity of cultural products.
Cultural Hubs builds upon some of the existing good practice in this area, but seeks to push the boundaries even further, by working closely with some of the high visibility cultural providers in the region - organisations such as:
We are able to provide schools with a direct line of access to some of our flagship organisations. For some of the children involved, this has given them their first point of contact with the cultural treasures that the rest of us often take for granted.
